This June, Pro Kids will host the Inaugural City Heights Young Writer's Workshop. This one day workshop is designed for young writers of all levels and all interests, ages 11-21. It will provide young people with an insider’s look inside the publishing industry. Highly regarded authors, illustrators and industry professionals will serve as mentors for the day.
City Heights is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in San Diego, and a hub for the resettlement of refugees. This workshop was conceived as a way to help raise up diverse voices within the fabric of the book world, which is struggling to overcome proven underrepresentation of minority characters and stories. We hope that by helping ignite the passion for reading and writing in young people of diverse backgrounds, this trend of underrepresentation can be corrected.
This workshop is dedicated to the memory of Jeannine Helmstetter, long-time literacy advocate and supporter of Pro Kids.
